Facial Liposuction and Fat Transfer

As we age, the fat in our face tends to redistribute itself. Generally it tends to head south – we tend to lose it from our cheeks (mid face) and it tends to gather in the jowls. Facial liposuction and fat transfer can reverse these changes. Both of these procedures can result in a significant improvement in facial appearance – alone or in combination.

Facial Liposuction
Facial Liposuction refers to removing fat from areas of the face where it has gathered (jowls and neck). This procedure is particularly helpful for those patients who have “lost their jaw line” or who have a “double chin.”

How is it performed?
After sedation, the area to be treated is numbed with a local anesthetic. A small liposuction cannula is then inserted through small puncture holes beneath the chin and behind the earlobe. The excess fat is then suctioned out and the patient then wears a compression neck garment for 4 days. They can return to work or normal activities on the 5th day. In order to minimise the chance of a bruise we recommend arnica for 48 hours prior and 24 hours after the procedure.

How long does Liposuction last?
Facial Liposuction usually only needs to be performed once. The results should be long lasting.

What is the cost?
The consultation with Dr Szalay costs $60.00. The procedure cost is $2200.00 The cost for the facial compression garment which is used is $77.00.

Fat Transfer
Fat Transfer refers to adding fat to areas from where it has been lost. As we age, the mid face tends to drop, resulting in a sunken appearance beneath the eye and a “tired look”. This is compounded by the loss of fat from the cheeks which also occurs with time. Fat Transfer is an excellent way of reversing these changes, resulting in a more youthful, fresher appearance.

How does it work?

Fat is taken from one part of the body (usually the lateral thigh or buttock) and transferred to the area where it is needed. Because the fat is from your own body, these is no chance of an allergic reaction.

How is it performed?
After numbing the donor site with local anesthetic, a small cannula is inserted through a puncture hole in the lateral thigh or buttock. The fat is then suctioned out. The area to be treated is then numbed with local anesthetic prior to adding the fat – again with a small cannula through a small puncture hole near the cheek bone. The whole procedure usually only takes 30 to 45 minutes. The patient then returns home and can return to work or normal social activities after 3 days. In order to minimise the chance of a bruise, we recommend arnica for 48 hours prior and 24 hours after the procedure.

How long does a Fat Transfer last?

After the initial Fat Transfer, usually about half the fat survives and the rest dissolves. Accordingly, it is necessary to repeat the procedure in 2 to 3 months. Usually, the result should then last several years although occasionally a 3rd treatment may be necessary in the first 12 months.

What is the cost?

The initial consultation with Dr Szalay costs $60.00. Fat transfer to the cheeks costs $1650 for the initial treatment and then $550 for the second or third treatment.
