Active Acne

Acne is one of the worlds most common skin conditions. It affects between 85-100% of adolescents by the age of 24 years, so you're not alone.

The good news is that an exciting new procedure is now available which is a significant breakthrough in the treatment of acne. Blue Light Phototherapy with ALA is an innovative therapeutic light that treats acne. The light destroys the bacteria that causes acne rapidly and effectively.

How Does Blue Light Phototherapy with ALA Work?

Acne is caused by a blockage of skin pores and a proliferation of bacteria within the pores. The bacteria creates inflammation and infection resulting in redness, swelling and the white tip of the acne pustule.

Prior to phototherapy treatment, a cream (ALA) is put over the acne areas. The ALA is a chemical which is absorbed by acne lesions. The Phototherapy then works by emitting a blue light with a wavelength (415nm) which specifically targets the ALA inside the acne lesions. A reaction occurs which destroys the bacteria whilst safely preserving the surrounding skin.

How Effective is Blue Light Phototherapy?

Blue Light Phototherapy with ALA is significantly faster than conventional acne treatments. At Precision Cosmetic Laser & Surgery, the phototherapy is delivered with the FDA approved Omnilux Blue.

The independent study presented to the FDA showed that Omnilux Blue achieved an average optimum acne reduction of 73%, which began occurring from 4 to 8 weeks.

What is the Advantage of ALA?

The experience of this practice is that adding ALA to Blue Light Phototherapy is significantly more effective that Blue Light Phototherapy by itself. ALA is only available through medical practitioners.

Who can be treated with Phototherapy with ALA?

Phototherapy with ALA has been proven to be effective on mild to moderate acne and anybody can be treated, regardless of their age.

In addition to the face, phototherapy with ALA can be used on the back or chest.

What is a Phototherapy Treatment Like?
You'll have to remove any make-up or sunblock. The ALA cream will then be applied. After 30 minutes you'll be asked to wear some safety goggles and the light will be positioned close to your face. The treatment lasts 8 minutes and you may feel a tingling sensation during the treatment.

How Many Treatments are Required?
2 sessions are required about 6 weeks apart. It is important to follow this regimen in order to optimise results.

What is the Cost?

If you wish to discuss a treatment, you can make a time with the sister for a free consultation. (Alternatively, if you wish to make an appointment to see the doctor, a fee of $60 will apply and you can obtain a rebate from medicare of $30.)

The cost of the phototherapy is $550.00 per treatment.

What Other Treatments are Available for Acne at Precision Cosmetic Laser & Surgery?

For patients with active acne, the Omnilux Blue Light Phototherapy with ALA is our most effective treatment. Other treatments which we offer however can be useful for deep acne and colour changes or scarring caused by acne:

(1) IPL / Photofacial
At this practice, we have found the photofacial to be very helpful in reducing the red or brown discolouration associated with old acne marks. In addition, outbreaks caused by acne rosacea can also be treated by this method. More about IPL..

(2) Vasculight
At this practice, we have found that the deep light penetration of the Vasculight can be helpful in some cases of deeper acne.

(3) Red Light Phototherapy
At this practice, we have found that red light phototherapy can be helpful in some patients with active acne.

(4) Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion can be helpful in obtaining gradual improvement in acne scarring.
