Laser Skin Resurfacing

Lasers

One of the primary signs of aging is the development of facial lines and wrinkles; smoking and sun exposure may accelerate this process. It is the laser's ability to reduce wrinkles and turn back the clock which is the main reason why people undertake Laser Resurfacing. Also, the laser's ability to markedly improve the appearance of acne scars is widely recognised.

The earliest laser was the CO2. More recently, the Erbium Laser has become available for Skin Resurfacing and has become progressively more popular among cosmetic laser surgeons because of its distinct advantages over CO2. Erbium laser technology provides a way to reliably resurface the facial skin, reducing wrinkles and improving skin quality.

Erbium
Laser Skin Resurfacing at Precision Cosmetic Laser and Surgery is performed with the Erbium Laser. The Erbium laser works by selectively removing damaged skin whilst tightening the underlying collagen, producing a smoother, younger and healthier appearance. Crows feet or laugh lines, forehead wrinkles, lines around the mouth and acne scars can be successfully treated with the Erbium. Other uses include the smoothing over of skin surface irregularities and the removal of brown spots, sun spots and areas of irregular pigmentation. All of this can be done on an outpatient basis.

Advantages
The Erbium laser is able to remove much thinner layers of skin than the CO2 laser. As a result, it has a number of distinct advantages. These are:

Precision
The Erbium can be used precisely to reach the exact skin depth in order to achieve an optimum result. This is particularly useful in the treatment of depressed acne scars when it is necessary to precisely "plane away" the skin surrounding the scar in order to smooth out the overall appearance. The CO2 lacks this precision.

Versatility
The versatility of the Erbium allows the cosmetic laser practitioner to tailor the degree of treatment to each individuals needs. All levels of damage from superficial blotchiness to deep lines can be successfully treated. In order to go deeper, the doctor simply makes more passes with the Erbium laser over the skin. In addition, the Erbium is able to treat sensitive areas such as the neck and hands as well as darker skin types. The CO2 is unable to do this.

Choice
Erbium resurfacing can be performed with your choice of anaesthetic cream, local anaesthetic or sedation whereas CO2 resurfacing often requires a general anaesthetic which makes treatments more expensive.

Conclusion
One should not draw the conclusion that the CO2 laser is outmoded. It has been, and still is, a steady workhorse for many laser technicians. The Erbium, however, with its more recent technology and clear advantages, is the treatment of first choice for the resurfacing of facial lines, acne scars, sun damage and other irregularities.
